Worst news was injury to Leif Davis - slipped patella - ouch and could be out for a while. He was looking very promising on left side of defence/wing back.

U23 team v Crystal Palace today. KO 1pm

Meslier, Burlace, Davis, Casey, Strujik, Cresswell, McKinstry, Jenkins, Haugland, Hudson, McCarron.

Subs: Miazek, Stanley, Roberts, Kumwenda, Chikukwa.

Good news is Davis is in the team after he was stretchered off last game and Roberts is on the bench.

Dont know anything about Stanley or Chikukwa, so if anyone does I would love to know more!

Meslier was very good , including his penalty save , and good to see Tyler back in second half . A good point given young make-up of our team.

Yes, Meslier was very good and Roberts looked as if he is really close to match fitness.

Very young side mosty of 17/18 year olds so a good point.

Anyone know what has happened with Jordan Stevens? And is Bobby Kamwa still injured?

Think Stevens is serving a suspension for betting on football matches.

Winning 6-0 including 2 from Eddie.

Roberts is on and looks fit. Casey and Struijc look quality especially the latter. Gotta and Davis busy and McKistry looks decent

Strangely enough Clarke looks terrible. No end product and some bad decision making

Oh and Ayling is on and just scored..

If we get promoted I would make Haaland our first target. His stats for Saltzburg are crazy, he has openly said he would live to play for us in the Prem and the wages would be simple on promotion.

Just for those that haven’t seen his stats...

Played 9
Scored 17
Assist 4
Hat trick 3

First half hat trick in the UCL tonight.

He'd certainly be a very nice replacement for Nketiah when he returns to Arsenal.... 👍

I would make Nketiah the top target if we get promoted. And pay what it needs to get both him and White.

We were awful first half, totally inept.

Apart from Gotts, not may young lads looked like they could step up.

Clarke cannot believe his luck, on £30k+ per week and no better than most Sunday Pub footballers. Would obviously prefer to play for Charlton where their 10k crowds would not notice his lack of effort, desire and skill.

team v crewe :

Meslier, Douglas (Cresswell, 35), Davis, Casey, Ayling (Berardi, 35) , McCalmont, Bogusz, Gotts, Clarke (Temenuzhkov, 45), McCarron, Edmondson.  Subs: Skerry, Huggins,

skerry is 16yo aussie keeper that apparently signed recently and on bench for game.  More competition for Male and Huffer as #4 keeper ?

Male and Huffer  are out of contract at end of season. Cant see them being at ER for any longer.

Meslier is far better than either as is Maizek (also out of contract at end of season)

I know it not going to happen but for me I would be giving young Central defender Struijk a start in the first team in place of the injured Cooper. I mean every time he plays for the U23's over the past 2 season he has been pretty good. Added to that he is a natural left sided center back with good ball playing abilities plus he is dangerous from set pieces. Surprised he did not play in the U23's game.

Dan, agree with you about Struijk.

He's 6'2"+, strong in the air, has a decent turn of pace and can play the ball. Would hope he is on the bench v Millwall (Berra replaces Cooper IMO) but think Davis will get that slot even though he is only about 5'6"!

From last night’s game (0-0 against a good Birmingham side) the pairing Creswell and Casey looked rather promising. Both tall and robust. Otherwise, McCalmont with quick feet, and Bogusz with some good long-range efforts stood out together with Meslier who will be a very good keeper: good with his feet, brave, and good reactions on the line.

Agree that Struijk for some time has looked ready for a place on the bench for the first team.

Poor game
Birmingham down to 10 men for an hour .
Ball moved slowly side to side and created nothing against a defence who sat back.
Just like first team
Agree Casey and Cresswelllookeda decent pairing at CB as they played together for u18 last year.

Expect a lot of first team fringe will play like Roberts Shackleton Davis Stevens Gotts.
Expect we will see Charlie Taylor back at ER
Maybe he will think of what might have been rather than his bank balance.

BPF in goal I expect so should be some goals

Roberts wasn’t the answer we are looking for in the first team if that 45 minute cameo was anything to go by.
not many came out of that game looking like they are ready to step up (apart from the obvious 1st teamers getting minutes), it was quite infuriating watching the slow speed of passing in periods knowing they are a capable bunch of players but I think this may in fact reflect a slight change in philosophy as we’ve seen similar in the first team this year?

Why the regression after last season?

In context, Burnley are top of their U23 table and a Prem U23 side.

Many of our players are only 17-19 with Coops + Shacks coming back from injury and looking a bit rusty. Roberts and Clarke, too, have not had many minutes on the pitch so were also rusty.

Casey did look good on the right of a back 3 and has the stature for a CB as well as the ball playing skills.

Struijk was decent but he has played far better in many other games. Meslier was impressive again and I hope we make his deal permanent. Looks far better than Male or Huffer and I am sure can develop into a first team keeper.

Gotts, Davis, Ryan and Stevens really need to be playing men's football for their development. If they're not going to get minutes with us, we should really look to be loaning them out to L1/L2 clubs where they will get game time in 2nd half of the season. U23 games can only offer them so much then they have to gain proper experience otherwise they will stagnate and disappear.

Alfie is class but is a bit lightweight and easily knocked off the ball. In a couple of years time he will have filled out and if he keeps developing will challenge for the DCM or No 8 position.
